The Main Purpose of Public Libraries Is to Provide Books

The main purpose of public libraries is to provide books, and they should not waste their limited resources and space on providing expensive hi-tech media such as computer software, videos, and DVDs. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Traditionally, a library is a place that shelves many books that readers can read or borrow. However, technological advancement and its tremendous effects on the way we learn new things and share information have redefined the concept of a library in recent days. Thus digital content and technological facilities are widely used in public libraries all around the world and I quite disagree with the notion that these amenities are a waste of resources or space for a library.

Few people argue that libraries should be exclusively used only for providing books. They claim that the idea of libraries is to create a platform for a variety of books. They feel that some purposes of libraries like creating interest in books and improving bok reading habits are diluted. Recently there has been criticism from local societies on spending too much amount and space on computers and other media as they are available outside. These arguments made people think that public libraries are used only for providing books.

Another important point is that it is very difficult to always read books from the computer monitor, Traditional books can be issued from the library ad read in the comfort of your bed. Hi-tech media can be accessed only by those who are computer literate. Access to such media can be affected by power cuts and network failure. Moreover, in a traditional library, you are guided by the librarians if you need any help in searching for book sharing. It is anticipated that standard libraries would consist of digital and contemporary facilities to improve personal knowledge and expertise.

In conclusion, the conversion of public libraries also has made them more valuable to researchers and readers since they work as centres for interactive instruction ad knowledge sharing. It is anticipated that standard libraries would consist of digital and contemporary facilities to improve personal knowledge and expertise.
