The chart below shows estimated world literacy rates by region and by gender for the year 2000

The bar graph provides information on the aggregated amount of uneducated in the world in the year 2000 based on geographical area and sex.

Generally, the highest degree of illiteracy is common among females compared to males in all stated regions, of which the largest number is seen in South Asia, and it is about 55, which is almost twice the rate of illiteracy in males. Also, the number of uneducated increased in the following order of location; Developing countries, Latin America and Caribbean, East Asia and Oceania, Sub Sahara Africa, Arab states and South Asia.

In addition, it is observed that unlettered are rare in developed countries, and the difference in illiteracy rate between males and females in Latin America and the Caribbean is insignificant; the female is just about 1 per cent higher than males.
