Information technology is changing many aspects of our lives and now dominates our home, leisure, and work activities. To what extent do the benefits of information technology outweigh the disadvantages? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
It is true that technology is affecting our daily routines, and the influence of digital technology is irrefutable. Although there are some drawbacks to information technology, I would argue that there are far more benefits.
The main drawback of the excessive use of technology is the impact on physical and mental well-being, primarily due to the dwindling physical movement. A good illustration of this can be seen as adolescents turning into couch potatoes with widespread access to entertainment at their disposal. Secondly, it affects juveniles’ mental and cognitive abilities with dependency on digital assistance devices for basic mathematical calculations. Additionally, CGDs (Computer Generated Diseases) are flourishing among information technology users, such as chronic neck or spine ailment or eyesight issues due to long sitting hours in front of a computer.
Despite the negatives mentioned above, I believe that information technology has a plethora of positive development for various reasons. Firstly, they allow employees to work in a flexible way, meaning that they can work from home or elsewhere and not just stick to the office premises. This is mutually beneficial since it provides flexibility to the employee and cost reduction to the company. Secondly, advancement in home appliances provides great ease. For instance, many electronic appliances are loaded with intuitive and built-in menu options. Some of them can even be remotely controlled if they are IoT (Internet of Things) enabled. Finally, entertainment has gone to another level with the advent of cloud-based multimedia programs. It has been redefined by OTT (Over The Top) entertainment program such as Netflix.
In conclusion, while I recognize the possible disadvantages of information technology, I consider it to be a positive development overall.
