For decades now, there has been a considerable rise in the sale of imported foods over locally produced ones. This essay will shed light on some merits and demerits of this trend.
Firstly, imported foods bring some importance to the nation in various ways. For example, these foods are readily available in times of need. It also gives a wide range of food products to choose from. This allows the chance to try foods from different parts of the world. And as a matter of fact, these foods are far more affordable than local produce. This helps individuals as well as governments to cut down on expenditure.
However, imported foods can pose a lot of threats. To begin with, these foods are sprayed with chemicals to preserve their shelf life and make them appealing to the eyes. Medical researchers have been able to link these chemicals to heart problems and many sorts of health complications. Another disadvantage is that it causes a loss of jobs as local farmers mostly quit their jobs when their products are not being patronized due to importation. Also, imported foods are less nutritious as compared to locally made foods because they are mostly ripened artificially with chemicals and colour.
In conclusion, increased dependability on importation has some benefits like cheaper food, ready availability and low cost. Nevertheless, they create a lot of drawbacks like health problems.
