Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmers (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
While some people are of the opinion that unpaid community service should be a mandatory part of high school activities (For instance, working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children, in my opinion, it is a welcome development, and I agree that the benefits of such programmes are enormous, this essay will throw more light on them.
Admittedly, there are several advantages of participating in unpaid community services. Firstly, it facilitates students social skills. The act of interacting with other people in the community does not only expose them to life but also enhances their social life, thereby making them relate well with people. To illustrate, it will help a student to learn more about how to talk to an audience.
Secondly, it helps students to adopt and maintain good personal and environmental hygiene. Through working in the neighbourhood, students become conversant with good health behaviours. In addition, working for the charity inculcates in this students love for others. There are things that cannot be taught at school. For example, giving of alms helping the needy are innate behaviours we learn from our parents or within our neighbourhood.
Furthermore, it offers students a valuable working experience and helps them to use their time judiciously, instead of wasting it. This can be a source of leisure time for some students. Meanwhile, some can even develop an interest to pursue a career in teaching after gaining some reasonable working experience. To exemplify, my cousin, Chioma, who is now a seasoned teacher, developed interest from teaching children within our neighbourhood when she was in Grade 10. This is possible because she attempted it, even when it had no monetary reward.
In conclusion, although some people feel that incorporating unpaid community service into high school students programmes is a waste of time, I am of the opinion that it improves a student’s social skills, makes them engage their time meaningfully, helps them to adopt healthy behaviours, such as well personal and environmental hygiene amongst others.
